Title: The Practical Teacher: A Monthly Education Journal
Editor: Joseph Hughes
Publisher: T. Nelson
The Practical Teacher, originally titled Practical Teacher’s Art Monthly,[1] was a monthly journal distributed between 1881 and 1911.[2] The journal sold for 6 pennies, and generally found only a small audience.[3] Designed for teachers and those trying to become certified teachers, The Practical Teacher kept its audience up to date with ideas concerning education and helped teachers provide their students the most relevant materials available. The journal alleged three specific objectives. First, it intended to provide a supply of materials indispensable to teachers in their work at all grade levels. Second, it aimed to keep teachers in touch with educational topics, interviews with prominent educators, and reviews of educational literature. Third, it planned to assist young teachers in preparing for professional examinations.[4] Within each issue, The Practical Teacher includes articles on how to teach certain subjects, along with examples of lessons, teaching schedules, and questions and exercises for teachers to give to students. Issues also contain articles which examine and assess local schools. Editors of the journal operated under the premise that the health of the education in a particular nation is paramount to the prosperity of that nation.[5]
