Hood’s Comic Annual began in 1830 as a wholesome, comic mix of poetry, prose and illustration meant for the entire family—becoming the first of this sort of journal.[1] Thomas Hood’s dream of a family-friendly comic journal was still recognized by all the editors who succeeded him, who in their turn would try to "out do" the previous issue. In the preface to the 17th edition, the Dalziel brothers say that they are publishing this for the “laughter-loving British nation.”

Though the journal went through several different editors in its more than 60-year run, it still remained a family-fun journal, and was contributed to by many well known humorists. These include W.S. Gilbert and Americans Mark Twain and Charles Godfrey Leland. [2] The journal was published once a year, near Christmas, making it a popular gift.
