Title: Ladies' Companion and Monthly Magazine
Editor: W. W. Snowden
Publisher: W. W. Snowden
The Ladies’ Companion is a menagerie of music, love, gothic romance, poetry, pithy quotes, stories, history, and religion. This magazine, along with five other competitors, competed with the popular Godey’s Lady Book. Despite the implied audience, men and children read magazines like The Ladies’ Companion as well. [1] The subtitle for The Ladies’ Companion differs, but the editor was W.W. Snowden, with the help of Lydia H. Sigourney and Emma C. Embury. [2] The portion of the magazine called “Editors’ Table” states that The Ladies’ Companion is an “instructive and fashionable miscellany” and praises itself by saying, “It is a delicious repast that we spread out before you on our beautiful pages; may your minds feed and strengthen upon its savory viands. The object of the ‘Companion’ has always been the inculcation of pure morals and a refined taste,—the edification and entertainment of its numerous patrons.” [3] Even in a world dominated by men, The Ladies Companion is not always favorable of men, praising and disdaining both men and women. One story went so far as to praise a woman who “ is not only amiable and lovely, but that she can convey to [her husband’s] mind, and the minds of their children, through the medium of written language, the bright and beautiful images that spring in her own.” [4] Some frequent contributors were Emma C. Embury, Caroline Orne, Thomas Harris, and Lydia H. Sigourney.
