Title: The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine
Editor: Samuel Beeton (1852-56), Samuel and Elizabeth Beeton (1856-60)
Publisher: Samuel Beeton, London
Started in 1852 by editor and publisher Samuel Beeton, The Englishwomen's Domestic Magazine, was the first magazine to be written for middle-class women. The magazine focused on "home management" and "offer[ed] practical advice to women.[1] Advice included practical knowledge on dress making, as well as scientific, technological and medical advice within the domestic sphere. Typical genres included biographies, essays, tales, and recipes. Prior to its publication, upper-class women were offered magazines of "fashion and leisure", while the lower classes had access to "fiction-led" magazines intended for the family.[2] While the typical journal cost a shilling, Beeton's magazine cost two pence. The revolutionary cheap price of this middle-class periodical in effect augmented large readership and overall success. By 1860, however, the magazine was well established, and the Beetons revamped the journal to target upper-class women. Aside from becoming larger, longer, and more expensive, the content of the magazine also changed. More space was dedicated to fiction, fashion, and the increased interest in the "Woman Question."[3] A new column was added called "Conversazione," which "facilitated much debate including fierce and prolonged exchanges over tight lacing." [4] Other changes included large colored foldout embroidery patterns and colored steel engravings.[5] Authorship varied, but most articles were written by the Beetons. Other authors were either minor or anonymous. Yet, notable mentions include Thomas Hood and Harriet Beacher Stowe.
