The Folklore journal, published by the Folklore Society in London, has been publishing its journal quarterly from 1878 to the present day. When the Folklore Society first started publication, it was known as The Folk-Lore Record. True to the title, the first issue of the journal contained the records of the society (members, and officers), the rules and regulations, and the organization's directive: “the preservation and publication of Popular Traditions, Legendary Ballads, Local Proverbial Sayings, Superstitions and Old Customs (British and foreign), and all subjects relating to them.” [2] The journal was published under this title until 1883 when it was changed to The Folk-Lore Journal. In 1890, the journal’s name was changed to what it is known as today: Folklore.

Since the journal was started, it has contained a wide array of tales, riddles, songs, and other traditions among people from around the world including Japanese tales, Welsh riddles, and various Cinderella types. The society has tried to be comprehensive, including in the journal reviews of works that could not be published within the scope of the journal. This same standard is maintained even today as the society continues to meet in London.
