Henry Hamilton Fyfe was born in London on September 28, 1869. He was born to Mary Elizabeth Jonas and James Hamilton Fyfe. His father was a journalist and barrister, and may have had an influence on Henry’s career as a writer. He got his first job as a reporter at The Times when he was 17 years old. After climbing the ranks, he eventually became editor of the paper, and this marked the beginning of his writing career. From here he wrote articles and edited at a number of papers including Daily Mirror, Morning Advertiser, Daily Mail, Daily Herald, and Daily Chronicle. In 1907 he married Eleanor Kelly, the daughter of William Kelly of the War Office.[1]
During WWI, Fyfe served as a war correspondent at the Western Front, sending news and articles back to London and residential areas. Like many war correspondents, he was offered a knighthood for his services but denied it. He believed that the political and military leaders of the day had let the country down, and saw the knighthood as a bribe to keep quiet about the corruption.
Along with journalism, Fyfe was also prolific in many other forms of writing. In addition to writing articles and editing for different papers, Fyfe regularly wrote short stories, novels, plays, biographies, memoirs, and political studies. Among these are The Pool (1912); The Borstal Boy (1913); The Kingdom, the Power and the Glory (1920); Arthur Wing Pinero (1902); Twells Brex (1920); Northcliffe (1930); T. P. O'Connor (1934); and Sixty Years of Fleet Street (1949). And one of his very first works was “The King Who Was Never Tired” (1905), published in the children’s annual The Dream Garden. As his works show, Fyfe was a diverse and knowledgeable writer. [2]
He died alone and childless in a nursing home in Eastbourne, Sussex, on June 15, 1951.
