Overview
Little Wide-Awake: A Story Book for Little Children was a children’s magazine published as a hardcover book. The first publication came out in 1875 and was edited by Lucy Sale-Barker, a British children’s writer, who continued to edit the magazine until her death in 1892.[2] The 1875 edition contains 400 wood cut illustrations engraved by the Brothers Dalziel, a firm of Victorian engravers founded in 1839, and Kate Greenaway’s father, John Greenaway.[3] The preface of the first edition reads, “All these stories have either been invented and told, or recollected and told, by me [Mrs. Barker] to my own children...Most of the stories are my own, but here and there loved old friends, in the shape of poetry or prose, have been interspersed . . .”[4]
