Title: Physical Culture

Editor: Sandow Newnes; Eugen Sandow

Publisher: Gale and Polden Ltd; Harrison and Sons.

Physical Culture was a late Victorian and early Edwardian periodical, running from 1898 through 1907. After 1898, the periodical was officially known as Sandow’s Magazine of Physical Culture. The editors were Sandow Newnes and Eugen Sandow. Regular contributors included G. F. P. Bussy, J. De Haas, A. Henriques Valentine, among others. The periodical was bi-monthly. The aim of the magazine is explained in the quote, located in the introduction of the first issue, “Physical Culture-What is it?. . .Athletics and sports---everyone understands them; but, always excepting the small thinking minority, “Physical Culture,” to most people, represents little more than an expression the meaning of which they would experience considerable difficulty in defining were they called upon to do so on short notice.”[1] Physical Culture was essentially a sports magazine, with articles on the various sports and instructions in exercising and sports. The periodical also hosted a few stories.[2]
