Pleasant Hours was a monthly periodical issued by the Church of England. It was published by the National Society's Depository from 1861 until 1874 and printed by W. Clowes and Sons in London.[1] Directed towards a juvenile audience, Pleasant Hours was intended for short, enjoyable reading and each issue averaged eleven pages. As a general rule, issues begin with a few pieces of short fiction—tales and allegories written about children, often intended to teach some kind of moral lesson. Following this, there would generally be a section of Sunday readings and religious instruction—often a biblical lesson or a sermon-like discourse. The final article would often give a detailed, scientific lesson in natural history. Also included are poems, small advice sections, and engraved illustrations. Authors are not identified.
