Title: The Family Friend
Editor: Robert Kemp Philip
Publisher: Houlston and Stoneman (1849?-1879); S.W. Partridge and Co; W.S. Orr and Co (1854)
The Family Friend was a periodical, produced monthly, which was intended to provide stability to the family. The large range of differing subject matter was meant to satisfy men, women, and children. Each issue started with a short story featuring a historical figure and generally included a moral. Following this story was a work of short fiction, which was published in segments over several issues. After this was a section on cathedrals including engraved pictures. The magazine included religious articles that were written to help save families from the influence of alcohol, immorality, ingratitude, and other habits harmful to domestic life. Additionally, The Family Friend included celebrity sections, scientific articles, practical advice, sensational news pieces, and poetry. It always ended with a song. Despite the magazine’s slightly more expensive pricing, the publishers obtained 50,000 readers after just one year of publication.[1] Most authors are not identified.[2]
