Title: Utopia: A Mutual Improvement Magazine and Monthly Review

Editor: William Herbert Scott

Publisher: Shrewsbery: "Shropshire Guardian" Newspaper Co.

First published in 1881, Utopia: A Mutual Improvement Magazine and Monthly Review operated as a periodical guide for the bettering and bonding of young men. As stated in the front matter of the first volume of this periodical, the editor’s goal was to “combine intellectual study with righteous criticism, and stimulate in all ranks of young men a love for literature that they shall assist one another, by varied efforts, to adorn and write the English Language in its simplicity and purity." The magazine editors encouraged "mutual reciprocity" to support their emphasis of literary pursuits. This unique service allowed subscribers to submit contributions to the publication. To support the Utopia motto, Recte Faciendo Neminem Timesas (Do right, fear nothing), many of the entries, by both editors and subscribing contributors alike, focus on developing and understanding appropriate societal behavior as well as understanding literature. The magazine comprises mostly essays, many of which are serialized to allow the author to address different points of each topic throughout the issues. In addition to the essays, a few poems and one serialized short fiction work were also included in each issue.
