Title: The Yorkshire Family Magazine
Editor: James Dibdin Hubbarde
Publisher: Simpkin, Marshall and Co.
The Yorkshire Family Magazine ran its first issue in April 1840 in Wakefield, Yorkshire and was edited by James Dibdin Hubbarde.[1] Although the title states it is for the family, the magazine is aimed toward an older audience, most likely parents and older children. It includes short fiction, poetry, and numerous advice articles covering topics as various as relationships and gardening. One such article is entitled “A Volume in Two Lines: For Bachelors,” and reads “When you intend to marry, look first at the heart, next at the mind, then at the person.” Short pieces such as this are common throughout the magazine and are most often listed as anonymous. Although many of the authors are unknown, there are a number of works published in this magazine by famous poets at that time such as Mary Howitt, Robert Story, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Other notable contributors include Richard Monkton Milnes and Robert Carlyle[2] The Yorkshire Family Magazine has articles on health, gardening, and travel, including recurring columns on common topics, including “The Kitchen Garden,” “The Family Physician,” and “The Working Clergyman.” The stories and poems included in The Yorkshire Family Magazine share a common wit and humor. This clever humor was found in the works themselves, and even in their titles. One example of such a work is “Counsels to Young Men on the Formation of Habits Which Tend to Promote Elevation of Character and Advancement in Life.” The magazine published its last issue in September 1840.
